The Austin Symphony Presents This Nationally Acclaimed Children's Artist And Grammy Award Winner In Bassoons, Boots, And Ballerinas: Joe Mcdermott

Austin, TX March 10, 2004 -- This Spring, the Austin Symphony is proud to bring the nationally acclaimed and locally beloved children's singer, songwriter, and Grammy award winner to the Austin Symphony stage for the very first time: Joe McDermott. This former performer of the 80's rock and roll Austin scene will captivate audiences of all ages, with an afternoon of classical selections in addition to award winning pops favorites. McDermott will create this sense of creativity and imagination with an unbelievable collection of his various hits (the ASO will also entertain with "Hoedown," "Waltz from Sleeping Beauty," "It Don't mean a Thing," "Firebird: Infernal Dance" and many, many more)! In addition to backing this family icon, the Austin Symphony will perform some classical favorites, like "Copland's Hoedown" before the guest artist takes the stage.

In the early 80's, the inspiring Joe McDermott mainstreamed fresh versions of Rock and Roll as leader of the Austin band, Graines of Faith, which would shortly terminate in the years to come. After graduating from the University of Texas, McDermott sought a job as a preschool art teacher, which led to his ownership of a Montessori school. During his time as a teacher, his children became an infinite source of inspiration for his music and inspired his first children's recording, which yielded many more records, such as I Am Baby, Great Big World, and his March 2003 release, Everywhere You Go, featuring fellow Austinite celebrity, Sara Hickman. McDermott's love for children's music and composition was only the beginning. McDermott has composed music for children's video games and software, and he has even worked with Stan and Jan Berenstein, authors of the classical series, Bernstein Bears. Recognizing his thrilling talent, Stan Bernstein notes, "Joe McDermott is an absolute wizard at communicating with children through music." Additionally, McDermott has appeared on the discovery channel's Home Matters, and the Toronto Milk International Children's Festival.

McDermott's amazing guitar talent, fresh attitude, and goofy sense of humor, combined with his vibrant appeal for young audiences creates an astonishing chemistry which awarded him the Parents' Choice Award Silver Honor in 2001 and the 2003 NAAPA Gold Award for Everywhere You Go. This enthralling family music event will give central Texans a chance to experience a taste of classical and pop grooves from one of the greatest children's entertainers around the globe.
