City of Orlando Fire Fighters Fill Boots with Donations for MDA
ORLANDO, FL August 14, 2004 -- In observance of the 50th anniversary of the partnership between the International Association of Fire Fighters and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, over 400 local fire fighters will conduct their annual "Fill the Boot" drive on Friday, August 20th, August 27th and September 3rd starting at 9 a.m. to benefit MDA.
Proceeds raised during the street side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs for people with more than 40 neuromuscular diseases at area MDA clinics.
City of Orlando Fire Fighters will be at various intersections across the city asking motorists to fill their boots with donations for "Jerry's Kids". Orlando Fire Fighters have supported MDA for the past 20 years. Last year, they raised over $50,000 for the Association.
Fill the Boot campaigns are among the primary ways in which fire fighters across the country have raised nearly $200 million nationwide for MDA's fight against neuromuscular diseases since 1954. City of Orlando Fire Fighters have also raised funds for MDA during "Lock Ups" that take place throughout the year. In June, they "arrested" Mayor Buddy Dyer, who raised $2,500 in bail to get out of "jail". Fire Fighters also hold sporting tournaments to raise money for the Association.
"Fire fighters are so inspirational — they never tire of helping MDA enhance the lives of Orlando area children and adults with neuromuscular diseases," said Susan King Poole "This year especially, we want to take every opportunity to let the community know how important they are to our programs."
